2005 Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh Institute Print E-mail
The 2005 Governor's Institute for Social Studies Educators was held in Pittsburgh from July 18-23rd.  The theme of the Institute was The French and Indian War. Participants had an opportunity to visit historic sites in Pennsylvania related to the 250th anniversary of "the War that Made America."

Participants looked at the events in Pennsylvania that helped shape an emerging society.   Pennsylvania before the War may be of interest to the reader.

In addition to looking at the critical events from 250 years ago the Institute also became familiar with the role of the rivers over time and how Pittsburgh emerged as today's tranformed city. Participants depending on grade level studied ethnic neighborhoods, the movement of people and goods, and the architectual development and changes.

The intense work week involved an immersion in mid-18th Century life and how continuity and change impacted Pennsylvania.  During the week participants were informed of their obligations to successfully earn 2 graduate credits. The Evaluation Rubric identifies the measures used to award credit.

Included in the rubric is a post-test that helped evaluate participant content knowledge.  Participants who attended may see their score on the 2005 Post-Test Scores chart.  The culminating activity was an alternative assessment requiring participants to perform in groups using National History Day guidelines.
