Governor's Institute | Print |  Email

Dear Educator -

The adoption of rigorous Pennsylvania Academic Standards led to the growth of intellectually rigorous programs of study to improve teaching and learning throughout the Commonwealth.  The Governor’s Institute for Social Studies Educators is an interdisciplinary experience that draws on the Academic Standards for Civics and Government, Economics, Geography, and History as well as infusing standards for Arts and Humanities, Mathematics, and Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.  Most years other academic standards areas also addressed as well.

The Governor’s Institute for Social Studies Educators provides rich content and a variety of learning opportunities to expand the knowledge base of teachers while demonstrating successful methods for engaging students.  As can be seen from the links on the right side of the page, this Institute takes advantage of the rich culture of Pennsylvania.  Each link shares some information about prior institutes.

The Pennsylvania Department of Education will announce the 2008 registration process for the Governor’s Institutes.  Additional information regarding scholarships for these week-long residential programs may be found at: http://www.papde.ws/

The tentative 2008 institute program will be held from Sunday, July 20th through Saturday, July 26th at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania.  The theme for the week will commemorate the 250th anniversity of the French and Indian War by exploring in-depth the Forbes Road and its importance over time.  Additional information on the tentative program may be viewed at the following link:    Along the Forbes Road
