Advanced Alliance Summer Geography Institute
-
Gettysburg College, Gettysburg, PA
July 27 - July 31, 2009
-
Enrollment for the 2009 Alliance Summer Geography Institute is now closed. All participants are required to read Lincoln's Sanctuary: Abraham Lincoln and the Soldiers' Home by Dr. Matthew Pinsker. Participants wishing to receive two graduate credits must bring a two to five page paper on: What influence did the cottage at Soldiers' Home have on Lincoln that he chose to commute rather than live in the White House during his summers in office? In addition, participants are asked to read Thaddeus Stevens and the Caledonia Iron Works by Wes Foltz in preparation for the Tuesday visit to Caledonia State Park.
-
The tentative agenda is provided to give a preliminary overview of the activities during the week. As one can see, it will be an action packed week with field studies on 3 days. A final schedule will be available at registration on Monday, July 27, 2009 at Paxton Hall located at the corner of Carlisle Street and Lincoln Avenue between 2:00 and 3:30 pm.
-
A number of outstanding individuals will be presenting at this year's institute to provide participants with rigorous scholarship and engaged learning. The scholars from institutions of higher education are linked to offer information about their backgrounds.
-
The Pennsylvanian Alliance for Geographic Education is pleased to offer this outstanding professional development as a follow-up to the 2008 Governor's Institute for Social Studies Educators - "Along the Forbes Road." This year the program will look at how roads impacted settlement in the 18th century, the Civil War, and tourism of the 20th century. As the institute progresses it will also focus on the heritage of several anniversaries: The 225th anniversary of Franklin County, the Bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln's birth, and 150th Anniversary of John Brown's Raid.
-
This is an advanced institute therefore participants have previously attend an ASGI or a Governor's Institute for Social Studies Educators. This is not a governor's institute and as such there are some differences to be aware of:
-
1. Participants earning the two graduate credits will have to pay an administrative fee.
-
2. All meals will be provided except Thursday dinner when participants are on their own for self-study in Gettysburg and environs.
-
3. Only a few breaks are scheduled and will be worked in according to the flow of the agenda. Participants needing or wanting morning or afternoon snacks or beverages need to provide for themselves.
-
However there are similarities to previous social studies institutes:
-
1. Wear a good pair of walking shoes because you will need them.
-
2. Transportation to and from the institute is the obligation of participants. There is no mileage reimbursement. Note: Participants may wish to car pool - a participants list is provided for rooming and carpooling possiblities.
-
3. Lodging, double occupancy, is provided in Paxton Hall. It was previously a motel so two participants will share a room and a bath.
-
-
